In the fall of 2021, my wife Cindy and I bought a 750 square foot house on the Fox river just outside of St. Charles, IL with the idea to give it a cozy cabin feel and rent it out by the night. We started out by using our primary residence as a long-term rental. Then we rented the family room of our new house by the night, and found it an easy way to make some money and introduce travelers to the Fox River valley. We were luckily enough to get this little river house in 2021 right after our first home sold.

Cindy has always been the color visionary and her taste has grown on me now. The foundation of our cabin themed interior design was adding multi-colored horizontal wooden wall boards throughout the living room, followed by two-layered paint in the bedrooms and kitchen that create a wood grain effect. The twinkling colors from a pair of stained glass lamps in the living room was on my list of non-negotiables from the beginning as well. After a number of internet image searches for cabins and fairy tale cottages, we chose a firecracker red paint for the exterior knowing that it would really jump out when it snows, and contrast the green grass just right in the summer. We just recently finished painting the 1980's style kitchen cabinets a dark teal. Not a bad splash of color for just tens of dollars. The house is our ongoing work of art, I'm continually making little photography or drawing projects and hanging them on the walls.
