Situated on a corner lot, the Arpdale House in the Zilker neighborhood of Austin activates two streets with two front facades. The folded planes of the roof unify these facades, dancing from one side to the other, creating a dynamic statement both unique to the neighborhood and respectful of its existing architectural language. The 2-story portion of the house is pushed back from the front corner to allow the 1-story structure to occupy the prominent corner and create a scale commensurate with the surrounding neighborhood.
The architects utilized a U-shaped floor plan with a central inner courtyard, locating windows primarily on the interior walls to provide privacy to the inhabitants and extend interior views into the courtyard space.
Outside and inside are blurred through the use of strategically located windows and a continuity of materials. The structural beams and underside of the roof flow seamlessly from the exterior to the interior and accentuate the unique shape of the roof.
From the stairs, there are stunning views into the courtyard and pool, the canopy of trees, and out over the undulating roof.
