This1978 home was transformed in 2020 into a bright, contemporary and clean-lined space. The owners, Amanda Tucker and Rick Goldberg, saw the potential to work with the unique existing footprint, while updating both the interior and exterior spaces and adding a stunning new master suite to the home.

Amanda and Rick splits their time between Houston and Santa Fe, and wanted to incorporate some design elements from the Southwest, while keeping the style of the home modern and minimal. This is seen in the new master suite, with beautiful beamed ceilings, plaster walls, and a built-in king bed frame and side tables that is inspired by traditional adobe architecture. Earth toned limestone and terra-cotta tile were chosen for the master bathroom, which is reminiscent of the desert and creates a spa-like vibe--the definite intention of Amanda Tucker, who was also the interior designer for the project.

Although modern in its lines and construction, the home offers warmth through the furnishings and accessories used throughout--like vintage handwoven rugs, natural fiber chairs, and global artwork collected by the couple during their various travels. The home's style is described by Amanda as "desert modern design," which she defines as embracing a natural aesthetic in a built environment, honoring organic materials, and balancing light-filled spaces through scale and height of décor and furniture. All of these elements align with the finished home, which very much invites indoor-outdoor living.

The couple completely remodeled the exterior of the home as well, removing old Hardy-plank siding and replacing it with a custom stucco technique in white to brighten the home and continue the contemporary design concept outside. The landscaping was also changed to match the new exterior and style--using drought-resistant succulents with lush tropical varieties in the front and back yard around the pool.

Now that the home is finished, Amanda and Rick enjoy spending time there more than any other place they have lived. "The home feels like us," says Amanda, "and that is actually a rather hard concept to achieve." A few of their favorite design features are the original spiral staircase that was updated with new white oak pads and paint, the limestone and zellige tile used in the master bathroom ("it reminds me of being in the middle of the desert"), and the outdoor shower off the master which allows private bathing in the surrounding Asian-inspired bamboo garden.

"It's like being on vacation every day in the middle of the city."
