1675 Madison is a three-bedroom residential renovation within a century old masonry building in the Westside North neighborhood of Kansas City, MO. The original building typology consisted of apartment dwellings on the second level for shop owners and patrons. In this tradition, the residence was completed as phase 2 alongside the renovation of the entire building, strengthening the link between businesses below and residential above. The renovated space, comprised of a new stair and elevator to access the second level, features stair treads, shelves, and louvered screens of repurposed wood from the original building. In this way, the material condition of the existing structure is brought to life anew serving as an example of repurposed and renovated residential architecture in the urban core.
