The Star Complex, so named for its claim to fame as Brooklyn’s first ENERGY STAR labeled building was designed by Coggan + Crawford Architecture Design and built by Giancola Contracting. The two-unit building, home to the Clarke family (and contractor Andrew Giancola who inhabits the first floor unit), sits adjacent to a church and boasts views of the Statue of Liberty from the spacious roof deck.

While the construction plans included a significant addition to the rear of the building, retaining the original infrastructure of the site’s old frame house was integral to the sustainable aims of the design. The old structure was refaced in stucco and punctuated with new windows. The new addition was built of steel framing, concrete floors, and clad in corrugated metal.
Other sustainable features include the roof, which is sloped and pitched for the installation of solar panels and, like that of the Barr Residence, is finished with recycled tire decking. Structural concrete flooring in the addition provides a significant thermal mass, improving heat absorption/retention, while flooring in the original frame house is bamboo, a sustainable material. Windows have been positioned to admit winter sun, while the balcony provides shade from summer rays.
The Clarkes enjoy the open floor plan of the interior that welcomes family life with two young children, but also appreciate the home’s increased soundproofing that provides peace and quiet when most needed.
