Joe Tanney, architect of the Dwell Home I and of Resolution: 4 Architecture, relates his Brooklyn Heights loft to a laboratory, where his wife and two daughters are subject to his experiments involving private/public space, storage, proportions and materials. The Tanneys moved into their loft 12 years ago and expanded into the adjacent studio in 2001.

During the renovation process, they re-accessed the space, which included a study of the natural light patterns. The result: light-infused living that incorporates wide windows and three skylights to maximize on the Southern exposure and airflow.
They also re-divided the floor plan into usable spaces while incorporating built-ins throughout. A large storage area, or “The Attic”, is stowed above what the Tanneys refer to as the “Go Away” room. And they dine at the “Life Table”—a built-in comprised of Baltic Birch and a concrete composite, Fireslate, which is 60% lighter than stone and about 1/5 the cost.
Though the two girls are currently bunked together and Dad has designated the “Go Away” room as the future home of the master bedroom, the experiment is constantly evolving and their hopes remain high for separate spaces. Such is the life of living with a modular architect.
