Working with a steeply sloped, compact site, the architect overcame the challenges of infill development to create a balanced massing, responsive to neighboring properties, and supportive of transparency, light, volume, views and outdoor space. An example of respectful modernism integrated into an established San Francisco neighborhood, the dramatic projecting bay window, an interpretation of San Franciscan tradition, floods light deep into double volume, open-plan living areas. An operable glass wall extends the living space outdoors. Ascending the theatrical staircase, the sensation of climbing a tree house is amplified by views through Eucalyptus trees, to the canyon park beyond. By day, the living experience is extended outward. At night, the house becomes a transparent light box, expressing the simplicity within.
