Tucked into a hillside site at the end of a cul-de-sac, this transformation of a 1930’s house in Cole Valley addresses a number of complicated site conditions while maximizing access to landscape, light and views. A unique site extending into the base of Tank Hill allows visual expansion of indoor spaces into the landscape beyond. A central stair core carved into

 

the hill provides unexpected views of the earth and landscape forms, while drawing user upwards to the public spaces above. Roof forms vary to address views to the east and north and combine with well-placed skylights to allow access to sunlight in all areas of the house despite its hillside setting. The vertical sequence terminates at a roof deck nestled between the sloped roof forms with panoramic views of the city and bay beyond.
