Axelrod Architects
SOMA

Originally built in 1907, the Clocktower Building in San Francisco’s South of Market district was a production site for the Max Schmidt Lithograph Company. In the early 1990’s the building was one of the first to be converted into live/work spaces, maintaining brick and timber as well as concrete industrial feel. Tasked with renovating a 1,800 square foot loft in 2008, Axelrod Architect’s work resulted in an industrial loft with a reinterpreted modernist aesthetic. While the original 14 foot ceilings, concrete columns, mezzanine level, and steel frame windows have been retained, the new materials presented—concrete, acrylic, stainless steel and plywood—extend the original
structural and industrial look.
