Patrick Wong, an Austin, Texas-based architectural photographer, asked the firm Cottam Hargrave for a carport addition after construction wrapped on the live-work space they designed for him on land he had purchased from his grandfather. “I handed Jay [Hargrave] two books: one on Alexander Calder’s mobiles, and one on insects,” Wong says. The result is a soaring, winglike steel, aluminum and Galvalume structure fabricated by the architects that gives additional protection from the sun, provides a smoother transition from exterior to interior, and allows clients and other visitors a covered space under which to park. Maria Cook and Lance Compa turned a carport into a breezeway in the steel-sided house they bought near Ithaca, New York, adding patio furniture and an orange bench to give the space a dash of color. Along with a patio, it adds 1,300 square feet of usable space during the warmer months. Photo by Adam Friedberg.
