loft heights dining room

Globetrotting Belgian architect Julien De Smedt carves out a space to call his own in a converted industrial loft building in Brussels. “As you can see in my own architecture, the indoors and outdoors are very connected. So, when I’m home, if the weather is good, I’ll open all the windows so it’s one continuous space.” The dining table, custom made by De Smedt’s friend Gilles van der Brempt, is on wheels so it can be moved out to the terrace. Ikea Urban chairs and Hee Welling’s dining chairs for Hay share the room with two bright-green vintage deck chairs, purchased at Brocéliande in Brussels. Photo by Frederik Vercruysse.

Modern dining room with long dining table and Jens Fager chair

With the help of architect Bart Lens, Veerle Wenes and Bob Christiaens merged a 19th-century building with a 1970s one to create a combined home and art gallery in Antwerp. In the dining room downstairs, Wenes entertains family, friends, and gallery visitors. The yellow chair is by Jens Fager. Photo by Tim Van de Velde.

A view of the dining room from the courtyard.

When Seoul architect Byoung-soo Cho set out to design his urban dream house, he turned to the city’s architectural history for inspiration. The result—–four overlapping boxes arranged around a courtyard—–is a peaceful enclave in the midst of the nonstop metropolis. A view of the dining room from the courtyard. Photo by Jeremy Murch.

The living room of the Nissenboim and Rice residence, featuing a ladder leading to the master bedroom.

Creative bartering and a healthy dose of sweat equity allowed a young Charleston couple to transform a derelict 19th-century structure into an inspired living space. The ladder, created by Peyton Avrett, is an unorthodox way to the upstairs, and it also serves as a fire escape since the house only has one stairwell. Photo by Daniel Shea.

Screen porch dining area with Teak table

On an island 20 miles off the coast of Maine, a writer, with the help of his daughter, built not only a room but an entire green getaway of his own. The screen porch serves as an auxiliary dining area and is furnished with a Teak outdoor table from Ikea surrounded by three chairs, including two vintage chairs and a silver 1006 Navy chair by Emeco from Design Within Reach. playful family home in belgium

A pair of interior architects with a years-in-the-making furniture collection recast an old Belgian factory as a playful family home. The stars of the living room are a pair of pink Bird chairs by Harry Bertoia for Knoll. Both the marble-topped occasional table and the wood table are vintage, the antique rugs are from Morocco, a Low Pad chair by Jasper Morrison for Cappellini sits near the fireplace, and the brass-and-steel coffee table was designed by Poorter and Holdrinet. The front parlor is a visitor’s first hint of the mix of furniture Tina Seidenfaden Busck has assembled for her showroom the Apartment. A pouffe from Azucena is matched with an array of vintage pieces: a Beni Ourain rug from Morocco, a mirrored chest of drawers from France, and a Finn Juhl Poet sofa. The next room houses a vintage Tulip table and chairs by Eero Saarinen and a Tube Chandelier by Michael Anastassiades. Photos courtesy the Apartment.

Modern dining area with striped rug and string lights on ceiling

A pair of crafty designers on a serious budget show that though their apartment may be short on square footage, it’s long on charm. The family's activity centers around the open-plan dining room, which does triple-duty as a living room and kitchen. Susanna prefers a motley set of dining chairs over a coordinated set; that way guests can pick their favorite when they sit. Photo by Petra Bindel.

In our April issue, we showcased an apartment in Hamburg, Germany, with a striking, matte-black kitchen from Vipp. The 77-year-old company became famous for its iconic pedal trash can before venturing into kitchens and other tools for the home. This isn't the first time that the Danish company's products have graced our pages, and here we've gathered additional examples from our archive that show how the brand's minimalist black kitchens are always a win in modern interiors.
