Asylum by Christopher Payne

I got an advanced proof of Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals by architect and photographer Christopher Payne  some time ago. But not until I really glimpsed and held the finished book did the power of his images, a six-year documentation of America's crumbling state mental institutions, come through.

London Design Guide by Max Fraser

It is perhaps a bit ironic that the official guide to the London Design Festival was fairly poorly designed—the maps in the back of the book were spectacularly unhelpful in trying to navigate my way through the streets of the British capital, especially when making a mad dash to another event across town. That's why I was pleased to pick up a copy of Max Fraser's newly launched London Design Guide.

Live from London: Giles Miller

When I came across Giles Miller's temporary showroom at Kingly Court off of Carnaby Street in central London last week, I was more than a little impressed by his range of Baroque-inspired cardboard furniture.

Live from London: Zoe Murphy

Pieces from furniture and textile designer Zoe Murphy were among of the standouts during our weekend tour of Tent London, an amalgamation of art, architecture and design on display at the Truman Brewery, a reclaimed warehouse on Brick Lane in East London. Best of SF 20 Modernism Show

This weekend's SF20 Modernism Show and Sale opened to the public this morning at San Francisco's Fort Mason Center. Dwell editors Aaron Britt and Sarah Rich took a spin around the floor and found some excellent mid-century furniture and art, exhibited by gallerists from around the country. We picked out some of our favorite items and put together a slideshow for those of you who can't make it to the show. But for readers who are Bay Area locals, do check out the show yourself. Even if you're not there to take a piece home, it's worth admiring the goods.

Live from London: Non-Stop Pop-Up

I'm not sure whether “pop-up” is just a buzz word or a new trend, but the "pop-up" label has been slapped on sorts of events and venues across the British capital during London Design Festival. Ranging from Libby Seller's garage-cum-gallery in Brompton to a makeshift letterpress studio in central London, various galleries, studios, restaurants and other sorts of ventures have set up shop in temporary venues for the duration of festival.
