Bar, Desk, NewYorker

The NewYorker is a savvy bit of furniture by designer Jen Turner that is at once a desk and a bar. We featured it in the November 2011 issue's 101 story on renting and here we present the fine bit of decor in all its dual-function, space-saving glory. We're betting your studio apartment didn't come with one of these. All photos by David Engelhardt.

Vinyl Sliding

Jack White believes the best way to introduce a new generation to the allure of albums is to bring the music to them—–in the Rolling Record Store, a custom converted delivery truck. He is well known for his music, but make no mistake—–the man also has the heart and soul of a designer. Last year, the onetime upholsterer decked out the eclectic Nashville headquarters for his Third Man Records. More recently, he converted a delivery van into a record-slinging mobile unit fully capable of supporting heart-thumping live performances. “We want to take it all over,” White says. “Just have little hootenannies right next to the truck.” Here's how he pimped his ride.

London Design Festival Recap

As with most trade fairs, it was difficult to find dense clumps of strong design at the London Design Festival; instead gems were dispersed throughout. When an object did stand out, the work was clever, as exemplified by a flat-pack boat made by two recent RCA grads; gracefully technical as in Jake Dyson’s handsome and super-long-lasting (will-it-to-your-grandchildren) task lamp; or adorned with traces of the maker’s hands as was Johannes Nagel’s pottery. Creativity was found, and hailed from, everywhere: The Australians made a fine showing at Designjunction while the streets of London, itself, provided wall space for those who didn’t want to hire an exhibition booth at Earls Court.

Fire Station 39 by Miller Hull Partnership

Hot Houses

When Seattle’s fire stations needed an overhaul, the city selected local architects to give these ultimate live/work spaces a modern-minded update. Seattle, Washington, firefighters don’t need to bunk next to their trucks anymore. Thirteen architecture firms so far have been hired as part of a $300 million program to upgrade all 32 neighborhood stations by 2015 (20 substantial renovations and 12 new constructions), and each proposed a sustainable new style of fire-station living.

NorthernGRADE Men's Market

We're celebrating the best of American-made design this month, and a pair of guys—Max Wastler and Joe Gannon—who make it their business to celebrate Americana all year long are taking part in the pop-up men's market NorthernGRADE this weekend in Minneapolis. Wastler and Gannon are selling sporting goods all with an American provenance under the name Buckshot Sonny's from noon to 8 PM at Architectural Antiques on Saturday, September 10th. I've known Wastler for a while and Dwell readers unfamiliar with his great blog All Plaid Out will know him for his great essay Ain't That America in the October 2011 issue. I talked with Wastler and Gannon about their venture, why they love American-made goods, and what's in store for Buckshot Sonny's.
