Snøhetta Curates Nordic Design

"Nordic Models + Common Ground: Art and Design Unfolded" recently opened at New York's Scandinavia House. Curated by Snøhetta, the Oslo-based architecture firm recently selected by SFMOMA to design their upcoming expansion, the exhibition culls a slew of contemporary works—architecture, product design, art, fashion, graphic design, and photography—by 35 emerging and established Scandinavian designers and artists. The range of work on view is compellingly varied, from Icelandic lamps made out of dried codfish to a Danish apartment building shaped like a mountain. Here's a sampling.

Seattle 2010 part two

Seattle, Part Two

Earlier this week, I headed to Seattle to report a story for an upcoming issue and to run around town to find the best food, furnishings, and other local favorites. Part one of my trip was bookended with croissants and Korean tacos and filled with glimpses of the Olympic Sculpture Park, city bike racks, freeway underpasses, and more. Here we pick up halfway through day two of my three-day trip.

Seattle 2010 part one

Seattle, Part One

Seattle did nothing to cast away its stereotype as the country's wettest city earlier this week. I traveled north from our Dwell headquarters in San Francisco to visit a house that will be featured in an upcoming issue and to get a taste of what the city has to offer. Here's part one of what I discovered.

W New York Downtown

While in New York City last month, I spent a night at the new W New York hotel, downtown in Wall Street. Like all W's, this one was peppered with self-consciously 'cool' design-y touches, some of which grated a bit. That said, I was particularly impressed with two elements of the design: the undulating, glowing ceiling in the lobby (or, excuse me, the "living room"), and the built-in furniture in the guestrooms.

Designs on Midtown Manhattan

I was back in New York last week, in part to attend the press preview lunch for I Saloni Milano in New York which is a six-week celebration of Italian design. The event is meant to comemorate the 50th anniversary of the Salone furniture fair in Milan. The lunch was at Mario Batali's restaurant Manzo in Eataly, and the man himself popped his head out to welcome us. The festivities commence in late November with a series of video portraits by Robert Wilson, a video installation of Leonardo's Last Supper by Peter Greenway, and events in 20 Italian furniture showrooms around the city. The food was great and it was truly an international gathering of design, art, food, and business. Quite fun! After that I had a little wander around midtown Manhattan to see the design sites, and finished off with a tasty treat at a new high-design cafe on Madison Avenue called D'Espresso.
