Clever Creatables

I was zipping about online recently and came across the sustainability-minded Swedes behind the charming product design firm Creatables. According to them, Creatables is "a network of product designers and engineers that develop smart products from industrial surplus materials and waste." They've only got a few products on the market at the moment, but their take on industrial refuse and it's opportunities to enter the home as winsome products got me immediately. My favorite so far is the Old News newspaper and magazine holder, though anyone still hard up for a bit of holiday decor might well be pleased with a set of A Brighter Future tea light clips.

Q & A with Confetti System

Confetti System is two friends—Julie Ho and Nicholas Andersen—who make their living creating festive and kaleidoscopic "party systems" out of tissue paper, sparkly mylar, and more. They've created confetti, shaggy geometric pinatas, and garlands for the likes of J.Crew and the band Beach House, and sell their rope-y metallic necklaces at Opening Ceremony and Bergdorf Goodman.

Text Appeal

Will Robison and Jacob Krupnick believe that transforming basic transactions into “retail experiments” will change the rapport we have with what we buy. Subports launched in late 2009 as a techie, Brooklyn-based, text-to-buy business model—–a one-time online registration links your credit card information to your cell phone number, and purchases are made by sending an SMS—–but the implications of the service subvert the conventional add-to-shopping-cart experience.

Nouvel Studio Factory Tour

If you've been following my tweets, you'll know that I've been in Mexico City for the last several days taking the lay of the design landscape. It's fertile down here, let me tell you. Though I'll offer a few more thorough posts later this week, I did want to get a slideshow up on the site showing what I saw at the Nouvel Studio glass factory. It's actually just outside of Mexico City, though considering how unrelentingly urban this sprawling 585 square mile city is, you'd never know you left town. Have a look at my Nouvel Studio factory tour to see how this glassmaker has a hand in everything from high-design one-offs to your favorite bottle of mass-market tequila.

Matali Crasset

Design iconoclast Matali Crasset—notably bespectacled and bowl-cutted—spent her youth in the French countryside before finding her creative feet in college. Now, with an international agenda that includes exhibitions, products, and furniture with some of the biggest names in the business—including Alessi, Established & Sons, and Moustache—she is consistently expanding an already diverse portfolio. After collaborating on the interiors for Nice’s Hi hotel in 2003, she recently completed her first architectural commission: the DarHi hotel in Nefta, Tunisia, which opened in September and offers a modern take on immersive, site-specific travel.

Hyundai Ride and Drive

Recently Dwell partnered with the Hyundai Sonata Uncensored campaign, an interactive, traveling exhibit designed to welcome visitors to a unique space where they could learn more about the Hyundai brand. As part of the collaboration, Bay Area designer and architect Christopher Deam created an installation piece called The Porch, a modern hangout for guests to take a load off, sip a beverage, and learn a little bit about modern design and the Hyundai Sonata. We caught up with Deam as he shared his inspiration behind his design.
