Young Designers on Display in Milan

It's no secret that during the annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, one of our favorite stops is SaloneSatellite, the portion of the fair devoted to young designers under the age of 35. Curated by an esteemed jury of international design stars and spearheaded by the indomitable Marva Griffin-Wilshire, SaloneSatellite is one of the most important opportunities for young designers to get noticed by the world at large. This year 11 designers have been selected to display and sell their creations for a short time during the holiday season (September 27-December 25), at Milan's premier shopping destination—the Design Supermarket at La Rinascente. A Timeline of Furniture and Lighting by Artek

Swiss brand Vitra has announced that it purchased Artek in a move to bring more global exposure to the iconic Finnish design house. Ever since Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl founded the company in 1935, Artek has been known for creating furniture and lighting in modern expressions ranging from the sinewy forms of Aalto's Paimio armchair to the rational minimalist shelving by contemporary designer Naoto Fukasawa.
