DMD Juhl Klemp

Finn Juhl Centennial at Designmuseum Danmark

This fall we had the opportunity to pay a visit to Copenhagen, Denmark, where design buffs and locals alike are honoring what would have been the 100th birthday of one of the most influential (and yet somehow, still relatively under the radar) Danish designer, Finn Juhl. Designmuseum Danmark—worth a visit for its permanent collection alone, a trip through the Danish craft tradition—is exhibiting a hit list of Juhl's best work through the end of 2012 in a show called "Furniture for the Senses." What's especially incredible about Juhl's furniture is how ahead of its time it is: expressive, playful, colorful, plush, and not what you might expect from something designed in the early 1940s.

Dutch Profiles: Gijs Bakker

Gijs Bakker needs little in the way of introduction—the Dutch furniture and jewelry designer founded the wildly influential collective Droog. But this great seven-minute video produced by Dutch Profiles serves as both a primer for the uninitiated and a smart look at how the master approaches his metier. Bakker talks about his take on jewelry design, his life as a teacher, and how young designers must resist the dictates of a uniform "Dutch Design," which he likens to "a kind of aesthetic, a kind of sauce that covers the product." Watch the video below, and if you need a second helping of Gijs, check out our interview from June, 2010.

Dwell got a tour of all the latest, plus a demonstration of one of the genre's most classic pieces: the original LGM system from Clei (in handy GIF form for your viewing pleasure).
