The New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects has announced the six winners of its biennial New Practices New York competition, which singles out promising and pioneering city-based architecture and design firms founded within the last decade. The jurors selected the winners from among 64 entries.

Restaurant Design by Roman and Williams

Established in 2009, Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch of Roman and Williams has been churning out tenacious restaurant designs in The Big Apple and beyond. Strong believers that architecture and design should be substantial and meaningful, not precious or arbitrary, the duo met while working in Hollywood as production designers and art directors where they designed more than 20 films, creating elaborate and historically inspired sets. Standefer was even handpicked by film director Martin Scorsese to be the visual consultant for several of his films. The Ramen Shop in Oakland

Nestled in the foodie-friendly neighborhood of North Oakland is a far cry from the ramen that you’ve come to know throughout your college years. The brainchild of three Chez Panisse alums, The Ramen Shop has already become a standout with its menu boasting the cohesive fusion of clever flavors like meyer lemon or burnt miso ramen. Aside from satisfying the umami of any food enthusiast, the eatery also serves as a visual feast with a contemporary rustic interior and dining space that resembles a modern war bunker.
