Architect Tom Kundig in his studio

Dwell on Design Preview: Tom Kundig Collection

We're huge fans of architect Tom Kundig's work here at Dwell, so we'll surely be stopping by his booth—D7—at Dwell on Design this weekend. Among the hundreds of other exhibitors, from solar panels to paint companies to full-scale prefab houses, he'll be showcasing his collection of architectural metal hardware, crafted in collaboration with Seattle metal shop 12th Avenue Iron. For a crash course in all things Kundig, here's a peek at some of his design work we've featured previously in Dwell and on

Casa Palacio: A New Retail Concept Store in Mexico City

In mid-April, home emporium Casa Palacio opened its doors in Mexico City. Designed by NYC-based retail architect Jeffrey Hutchison, the space is designed to make shoppers feel like they are at the home of a friend (with great taste) rather than in a shop, even though the space covers three floors and 60,000 square feet.

Shopping Los Angeles

Along with West Elm, CB2, and Ikea, actors Jayma Mays and Adam Jones visited a slew of local shops to personalize their Los Feliz abode featured in our June 2013 Furniture issue. “We don’t buy a lot of stuff, and it takes at least three trips to the store before making a final decision on something,” says Mays. “We had a budget, but we didn’t want to skimp on the things that would be used the most.” Here’s her guide to the best shopping in Los Angeles.

Design Shop We Love: The Future Perfect in SF

We recently had the chance to visit Williamsburg design shop, The Future Perfect's, newest west coast outpost in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco (check out our first report here!) and it certainly did not disappoint. Inside, a hearty mix of well-established, international, not-so-well-known, and local designers, such as Piet Hein Eek to Alfredo Häberli to Fort Standard, comely crowded the black and white walled small space.

Table of Contents: A Fresh Portland Design Boutique

Portland-based retailer Table of Contents hits all the right notes. A modern purveyor of objects and clothing from Rason Jens, Lostine, and Martino Gamper to Henrik Vibskov, Patrik Ervell, and Beatrice Valenzuela, respectively, Table of Contents opened late last year by two local designers, Joseph Magliaro and Shu Hung. Inside, the thoughtful, yet eclectic combination of glass, wood, plants, textile, and metal fill the shop and objects get arranged based on a theme, mainly to rally up the founders' varied interests. Can't make it out to 97209? Their online shop is always open 24/7.

Destination of the Week: Palm Springs

Palm Springs is one of our perennial favorite destinations for design; the region is positively riddled with midcentury modern architecture and vintage shops, and the natural landscape is breathtaking, too. We've covered the place frequently over the years, including visiting for Palm Springs Modernism Week in February. Here, a few of our favorite destinations in one of California's most glamorously time-stopped towns.
