Coffee Break: Third Wave Kiosk

A new coffee kiosk clad in reclaimed Cor-Ten steel sheet piles references local landscape and culture. It's located in Torquay, Australia, a beachside town about 60 miles south of Melbourne. ran a story about the cafe, praising it for "celebrating a spirit of invention, opportunity and making do with little means." We wholeheartedly agree with the assessment. Local architect Tony Hobba designed the structure, which looks modern, feels like it's been part of the coastline for years, and uses materials wisely (the metal used in the envelope was used as temporary formwork during the 2010 floods in Victoria).

Modern Farmer

Farming has come a long way since the quaint notion of a red barn and flowers resting in mason jars. With the launch of Modern Farmer, a print quarterly, website, and online marketplace dedicated to the art of farming and the people doing it well, a new breed of "rurbanista" has its go-to guide. Founder Ann Marie Gardner (who helped launch Monocle and New York Times' T Magazine) was inspired to create Modern Farmer through travels as a journalist and her country life in the Hudson Valley. She saw the need for a media outlet that could address serious issues around food and farming with a global perspective and modern aesthetic.

Q&A with Designer Martí Guixé

Designer Martí Guixé is well known for his conceptual food design and ex-designer approach as well as commercial projects like Camper sneaker shops. We met with Guixé at Design Indaba, where he last spoke a decade ago, when Flash was all the rage. "At that time, all the people were new media," he recalls. "For me it's strange that after 10 years, I came with the same work, just older. It's a pleasure that the work is still current." His new book, Transition Menu, is forthcoming in English and Italian from Corraini.
