Testing Strength on Knock-Off Furniture Video

Fritz Hansen Stomps on Knockoffs

I've been thinking and learning a lot about furniture knockoffs recently—stay tuned to read the results in an upcoming issue—so this video from Fritz Hansen came at an opportune moment. The Danish company leads an aggressive campaign against knockoffs and counterfeits of their designs, identifying and destroying fakes, as seen in the image below.

MAIK's Experimental Danish Design

Pronounced "make," MAIK is an experimental Danish design brand founded in 2009 by Andreas Sachse and Rune Rex. I spotted it when I was in Copenhagen last fall and although it was closed, I was able to peer through the window and suss out that it was a unique and compelling retail and manufacturing model. Once I got home I wrote Rex to learn more. Click through the slideshow to see and hear more about the company, in Rex's own words.

Hotel Fasano Boa Vista in Brazil

Hotel Fasano Boa Vista, Brazil

Just a few months ago, Fasano Hotels opened a sprawling property in Sao Paolo, Brazil, that highlights the natural beauty of the area. It's so easily accessible from the city that guests are shocked at how quickly they are transported into what seems like a different world—a world surrounded by lakes, preserved forestry, and stunning gardens that flow seamlessly into the Fasano Boa Vista. The man behind the hotel’s strong structure and bold design is one of Brazil’s most renowned architects, Isay Weinfeld. With this project, his goal was to create a hotel that looked and felt as wondrous and peaceful as the nature that envelops it.

The Dylan, Amsterdam

Last year I spent two nights at the luxurious Dylan Hotel in Amsterdam, and I'm excited to share my photos of the place. It's located in central Amsterdam, along the Keizersgracht canal, in a cluster of historic buildings that includes part of a 17th century theater; an 18th-century bakery and alms house; and a series of canal houses. There are historic architectural remnants throughout the property, including giant wooden roof beams (in my attic guestroom!), original twisting stone staircases, and yellow bricks that date back to 17th century that line the entrance hall. It opened as a hotel in 1999 and recently underwent a renovation; just last year, the design firm FG stijl redesigned ten rooms in an adjacent historic building. When I was there, they were still under construction, but I recently received photos of the completed spaces, and they're lovely. Take a look!

Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile; Remota Hotel, designed by German del Sol

Hotel Remota, Patagonia

In the vast plains of Patagonia stands the Hotel Remota. Architect Germán Del Sol, who is also a professor at the Universidad de Chile, wanted to conceal the luxury that awaits the traveler, "to lower the expectations, so its interior will appear unexpectedly in all its splendor." It’s all about the element of surprise—including the fact that even with its innovative design and lavish comforts, the hotel was built with a conscious effort to care for nature, striving to use minimal energy.

It’s been a busy few months for Willard Ford and Andrea Ching. The duo launched Ford + Ching, their joint-venture furniture and design company, in June at Dwell on Design. Q&A with Autograph Creative Directors

Donerik Dela Cruz and Aaron Pou describe their business as a “design start-up in challenging times,” but since launching Autograph, a brand consulting, art direction, and graphic design company, in April 2008, staying busy has been anything but challenging. In its first year of operations, Autograph has developed designs and campaigns for high-profile companies including Adidas, Levi’s, and Method Homes, to name a few.
