Everyday Objects by OKUM Made

Los Angeles, California-based product and furniture designer Daniel Okum of OKUM Made (and his 233 supporters!) can finally leap for joy. Six days ago, Okum's Kickstarter project for The Made Collection, his first, was successfully funded (and topping his intended goal, at that). A beautiful and simple series of everyday objects that "emphasize material and craftsmanship through form," The Made Collection is comprised of four handmade products—Pinocchio Salt & Pepper Shakers, SQ Trivet, Paddle Coathooks, and V Tray & Bowl. Backers can expect to receive OKUM's first batch of goods this May, but non-backers will eagerly have to wait until a second production date is announced.

Color-Pop Friday

It's a Pantone world; we're just living in it. From its foundation as a printing company to the unified system with mass appeal that we know today, Pantone has streamlined the color selection process for designers since the early 1960s. According to a recent New York Times article, founder Lawrence Herbert has even matched "color charts for wine, anemia blood samples, and for walnuts and strawberries and goldfish.” Now, a clever Danish company has applied the Pantone hues to another color-codable area of the home: the closet.

Arad was awarded the commission for his design "Reflecting Absence" in 2004 and worked closely with LMDC and families of the victims to arrive at the present design. With Work and Play as its theme, the eight acre site acts as an urban room allowing visitors and locals to gather while honoring the victims and celebrating life. Until construction is completed, tickets must be reserved in advance at National September 11 Memorial Memorial & Museum.

Mid-Century Makeup: The Fontenell in Palm Springs

A mid-century oasis in the desert, The Fontenell, was built in the late '50s for the family of makeup and cosmetics icon Max Factor. Seeking a place his family could relax together, seven fully-equipped bungalows in fashionable Palm Springs fit the bill. A mid-century Melrose Place of sorts, the compound circles a courtyard equipped with a triangular pool. The setup allowed for easy family gatherings, but also enabled an easy escape to privacy if needed. With the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop, the rooms have been completely restored to their mid-century glory, with carefully selected furnishings and accents. The very colorful kitchens (in pink, yellow, or turquoise) contain original cabinetry, countertops, and appliances—including rarely seen eye-height refrigerator and iceboxes. Surrounded by a plethora of mid-century touches, it’s not hard to imagine The Fontenell playing host to many a martini-strewn after-party following a night of dancing at the iconic Chi Chi Club back in the day.
