Modern Mountain Retreat in Washington

Nestled in a subalpine meadow valley in Washington, the Ranchero House is surrounded by a beautiful but demanding landscape. A Seattle family had frequented the area for years, making the three hour drive into the Okanogan National Forest for cross-country skiing and hiking. They asked Tim Hammer of CAST architecture, also based in Seattle, to design a structure that could survive forest fires, five feet of snow pack, house guests (and their ski gear), all while requiring minimum maintenance and energy usage. The result is a hardy weekend retreat that’s fine-tuned to its residents and its surroundings.

Inside This Modern Tower Is an Idyllic One-Man Sauna

Münster-based firm Modulorbeat recently built a one-man sauna on an abandoned steel factory site as part of a year-long festival exploring the economic uncertainty of the region surrounding Bochum, Germany, a former industrial hotbed. The 25-foot-high tower is made from stacked precast concrete units. With three floors and a lounge deck, the compact unit includes a plunge pool, a sauna, and what the firm calls a relaxation room on the top, offering a stunning view of the sky.

A Prefab Home on Washington's Puget Sound

To build a home on a remote plot of land in Washington State, former Angelenos Amy Staupe and Christopher Roy commissioned Method Homes to construct a highly personalized prefab structure. "We had gone back and forth on prefab or custom so many times," Roy says. "A lot of the prefab we saw was either too expensive, didn't meet our needs, or it just didn't appeal to us. I had sort of given up on prefab, thinking that the market just wasn't ready for us yet." As he was driving on the freeway, Roy spotted a convoy of prefab modules and noticed that they were from Method Homes. "I thought, 'Hmmm… Maybe I ought'a give those guys another look,'" he says. The couple soon embarked on a year-long project to create a haven in the forest, which they documented in striking detail on ruralrebound.com. Staupe and Roy walk us through the finished product.
