DOD Preview: Dror for Target

The multidisciplinary designer Dror Benshetrit specializes in what you might call "sleight-of-hand design." With a twist of the wrist, a little audience participation, or maybe just a change of perspective, his work for clients from Levi's to Cappellini transforms right before your eyes. This year, the Tel Aviv-born Benshetrit joined the ranks of Phillippe Starck and Michael Graves as the latest creative to be corralled into the Target designer stable, with the launch of Dror for Target this month, to be featured at Dwell on Design. We called him at his studio, located on 39th Street in New York's bustling Fashion District, to ask about working with Target, how designers should look to the fashion world for inspiration, and why it's important to touch your possessions every once in awhile.

Faces of Freedom

South Asia is a region known for producing beautiful handmade rugs which are sold all over the world. What many people don't know or consider when admiring these exquisite pieces is that most of them are made by young children under exploitative and inhumane labor conditions.   This year at Dwell on Design in Los Angeles, we're looking forward to hosting a special touring exhibition called Faces of Freedom, which aims to raise awareness about child labor in the carpet industry through photographs taken in the carpet factories and weaving facilities of South Asia.

Paul Donald

When we peruse the carefully curated products in a great design shop, one of the most intriguing discoveries—more than any one particular object or accessory—is the entrepreneur behind the business. In our May 2009 issue we've premiered a new section of the magazine called Design Finder where we chat with one of our favorite store owners about how they were seduced into retail, how they select their inventory, what they’re currently longing for, and more.  For our first iteration, we spoke with Paul Donald, the founder of Branch, an online purveyor of modern green products. Donald, a former graphic designer in the magazine industry, launched the company in 2005 after discovering a dearth of stores in which he could consciously consume. Here, we present the extended interview with Donald.

Killspencer Bags

I came across a handsome group of weekender and messenger bags by Killspencer last week in my online meanderings. I learned from the website—the only place you can buy a bag—that they are designed and made in Los Angeles, but only after talking with head bag man Spencer Nikosey did I learn that the company is less than a month old, and debuted at his senior show at Art Center College of Design in LA.
