"That rug really tied the room together," says Walter Sobchak in the Big Lebowski. We here at Dwell have interviewed our fair share of designers over the years and many advise that rugs are the foundation of a "successful" design scheme. Birdhouse Residence by Adam Sokol

One of the fastest growing and richest American cities in the early 20th century, Buffalo’s remaining building stock from its boom times is hard to match. But a lengthy period of economic stagnation and suburbanization since has led to a scant collection of postwar architecture, particularly housing. A hopeful sign of more progressive times exists, however, in what’s called “Birdhouse,” a new residence by local architect Adam Sokol.

At Home in L.A.

Currently on view in Los Angeles is an unconventional show organized by the artist Fritz Haeg, best known for his Edible Estates project, in which he helps homeowners replace their front lawns with wilder, food-producing gardens. "At Home in L.A." is an interactive installation that invites visitors to make themselves at home on a massive crocheted rug and to "try out" L.A. living for a little while.
