Thread Wrapping Machine by Anton Alvarez

The Thread Wrapping Machine by Swedish-Chilean designer Anton Alvarez is a tool to join different types of material with only a glue-coated thread to bond it. No screws or nails are used to join the different components of the furniture. By using this construction method, materials such as wood, steel, and plastic can be joined to form objects and spaces. By using an externalized joint, Alvarez can combine a wide range of materials that normally would require time-consuming methods of jointing. A decorative pattern also appears with the different colors of the thread. Check out the video below to witness the machine in action.

Steven Holl's Daeyang Gallery and House on Film

In our May issue, we examine the connection between architecture and music in the work of expert architect Steven Holl. One of his latest projects, the Daeyang Gallery and House in Seoul, South Korea, takes its inspiration from an obscure score by composer Istvan Anhalt and transforms it into a shimmering trio of pavilions rising out of a pool of water. Holl, at times unhappy with the static experience of architecture in a magazine or book, hired filmmakers Spirit of Space to make two films on the house—one a meditative tour and the other an interview. Don't miss our story in the June issue, and to whet your appetite, check out the videos here.

Emerging Voices Lecture Series: cao | perrot Studios & PRODUCTORA

Last Thursday, the Architectural League hosted the final lecture in a series featuring the recipients of the 2013 Emerging Voices program. Last week’s lecture featured Andy Cao and Xavier Perrot of cao | perrot studio and Carlos Bedoya, Wonne Ickx, Victor Jaime, and Abel Perles of PRODUCTORA. Kate Orff, a Vice President of the Arch League, praised the site-specific sense of form in both firms’ works and their unique ability to engage in “direct dialogue with landscape in a fresh way.”

Kickstarter of the Week: DHaus Dynamic Living

Our favorite Kickstarter this week is an exciting new project that runs the gamut from furniture to architecture. Modeled on English mathematician Henry Earnest Dudeney's clever way of transforming a square into an equilateral triangle, the D*Table, from the D*Haus Company comes in four pieces connected by removable hinges. Move the four components around from square to triangle, or any shape your space dictates, and you'll find one of the most versatile low tables out there. Each module has different shelving and facets too, giving you a raft of options as you configure the design. DHaus Dynamic Living goes a tick farther than furniture in its video though, suggesting the eventual application of this system in architecture. They envision a house that literally folds out to meet its surroundings, a truly dynamic piece of architecture designed to embrace the outdoors. That does feel rather far away at the moment, but the D*Table looks to be a worthy investment indeed.
