A Modern Retreat in Rhode Island

On a secluded plot of land in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, Brooklyn's Lubrano Ciavarra Architects crafts a modern weekend house designed to frame its landscape. Residents Paul and Sophie wanted to build something that would fit in with its surroundings and allow them to enjoy the nature preserve located adjacent to their three-and-a-half-acre lot. "It's Spartan but warm. It has a modern sensitivity that's practical," says Paul of his new house.

Desert Canopy House

We're thrilled to have architect Whitney Sander back to Dwell on Design this year to talk about his unusual prefabricated building system. Sander's hybridized prefab approach sees his homes' frames in the factory out of light-gauge steel parts. Then they're bolted together on site. Sander will be talking on Friday, June 21st on our Prefab Goes Big panel about the limits of prefabricated housing and what his system achieves that others cannot.

A Mid-Century Renovation in Washington

This classic mid-century modern home in Lakewood, Washington, had great "bones" that had been compromised by subsequent remodels. The bathrooms were dated, the hallway was gloomy, and the kitchen was practically non-functional. DeForest Architects opened up walls, updated finishes, and created a kitchen centered around what the residents call "the mother of all islands." Click through our slideshow, with photos by Ben Benschneider, to see a fresh, updated 2,400 square foot home that honors its mid-century roots.

Contemporary Modern in a Mid-Century Mecca

When Andy Linsky, a realtor specializing in mid-century homes, and his partner Michael Thomas, set out to build a home of their own, they enlisted architect Ana Escalante to realize their vision. After seeing just one project by the architect, the duo knew Escalante would be adept at creating a home worthy of the pedigreed surroundings in Palm Springs, California. The result—a block, steel, and glass 7,600 square foot structure that blends in with the many mid-century homes the desert community is known for, belying the home’s youth. Yet, seamlessly concealed passive design strategies signify the structure’s contemporary roots.

Through House in Toronto, Canada

A house from the 1880s that's narrow, small, and in terrible shape: is this the place for a great modern interior? In the hands of Toronto architect Heather Dubbeldam, it turned out to be exactly that. Her client, doctor Yash Patel, had a green agenda and a commitment to contemporary design. "I wanted it to be small; energy-efficient; and beyond that I let Heather and her associates figure it out," he says. "I let them run." Dubbeldam used a variety of strategies to keep it green (the tiny utility bills prove this), but also created remarkably rich spaces and textures in this small house and equally tight yard. Her remodel of the house kept its 1,450 square feet of interior space, but carved it into an open plan, and established strong visual connections between the house and the yard. Now both zones flow into each other—limestone, ceramics, cedar boards, and a row of beech trees all working together in subtle harmony.
