Reader DIY: A Modern Granite Grill

We love hearing stories about how our magazine and website have inspired readers to tackle their own modern design projects, at any scale—whether it be a full-blown house or, as featured on the Letters page of our July/August issue, a combination magazine rack and end table made from repurposed issues of Dwell. So we were excited to receive photos of this BBQ grill, sent in by Luciano Marques.

Bookbinding

For those who adore the beauty of a blank-page-in-waiting, behold! The incredible allure of a hardback book you make yourself is just too damn much to resist.

Scrap Wrap Bracelets

I've got a habit—a little hoard-y, but not necessarily bad—of buying craft-ish supplies with no concept of what I will do with them. A while back at the local Mission Fabric Outlet (which is a great, great place, if you're in SF and need a shop for textiles, odds and ends), I noticed a display of Ziploc baggies full of small leather scraps... for $2 each! Score. I bought one, brought it home, and stored it with the rest of my stuff. Same with this spool of aluminum wire. It just looked like something I'd want, sometime, so I made it mine and set it aside. It took some futzing around one night while my mom was in town, and we came up with the idea for this scrappy wrap bracelet. It's easy, and quick, and you can use any small strips of fabric (if leather's not your thing). Here's how!

Jabba the Hutt Pillow

You’d be hard pressed to find someone—in this or any other galaxy, no matter how far, far away—who is not a fan of Star Wars, and the insta-classic from 1977 is now a franchise that clearly needs no introduction. Bonnie Burton is an aficionado of the highest order and, as a lucky Lucasfilm employee, keeper of the StarWars.com kids section. Since 2004, she’s been posting regular craft projects bringing beloved characters—and Jar Jar Binks—to googly-eyed life, and recently released The Star Wars Craft Book, the very first published collection of Star-Wars-themed how-tos.

Storage Slings

For those spots where a table will take up too much space and piling your on the floor isn't exactly appealing, try hanging a sling from the wall for a bit of extra decorative storage.

Braided Rag Vessels

Ever since I got my hands on a copy of Meg Mateo Ilasco's latest book, Crafting a Meaningful Home, I've been flipping through trying to decide what to start working on first. Calling upon creative folks from across the country to share projects with a personal tie, Meg's hardback not only offers a wide-ranging array of 27 things to make, but a lovely portrait and background of all the contributors, too, who range from Lisa Congdon to Billie Lopez and Tootie Maldonado from ReForm School to Derek Fagerstrom and Lauren Smith of Curiosity Shoppe fame. I was drawn to Brooklyn–based Sian Keegan's braided rag vessels when I had a chance to check them out in person at a show at Congdon's Rare Device and, as luck would have it, found all the necessary materials already kicking around my apartment (yesss!).

Introducing Home Work

Hello, friends! Welcome to Home Work, a new column on dwell.com. We’ll be visiting artists, designers, and creatives you know and love and introducing you to some whom you haven’t yet met; checking out the latest—and greatest—DIY, crafting, and how-to books; and sharing projects large and small for you to take on along with us. My hope is that each post will ignite a little spark and inspire you to start something new, or give you an idea to add to something you’re already working on. First up: 'Tis the season for sending your love via holiday cards.
