The art of live film narration reached its peak with the benshi, a performer who voiced silent films from the stage. Reviving this tradition with a contemporary twist, the "neo-benshi" mutes the soundtrack in scenes from feature films or TV shows and uses in-synch commentary, ventriloquism or music to reinscribe the source material with new meanings.
