Pop-Up Magazine
April 17, 7:00 PM

Print media has found itself on shaky ground recently (along with every other industry), and magazine lovers are raising their voices in support of preserving the printed page. While many publications have drawn in their paper tentacles and forged ahead with digital versions, Douglas McGray has a project that takes magazines in an entirely different direction.
A fellow at the New America Foundation and writer for the New York Times Magazine and This American Life, McGray founded Pop-Up Magazine with the idea of bringing the magazine experience to life in a performance venue, with noted journalists acting as the performers, sharing their observations with an audience. The performance flows like a printed magazine, with short reviews at the beginning and longer pieces at the end, presented in the form of film, slideshows, radio pieces, and also written work.
Describing the inspiration behind the event, McGray said, "It occurred to me that writers and documentary filmmakers and photographers and radio producers never get to share a stage. But so many of us are motivated by the same concerns - documenting, explaining, telling stories. It seemed like it would be fun and interesting to mix all these nonfiction genres together, in a really casual setting, see what happens. "
The upcoming performance, which takes place in San Francisco next week, will feature notable media personalities like Michael Pollan, Peggy Orenstein, Todd Hido and Larry Sultan. Some of the people behind the scenes on the Pop-Up Magazine staff are equally accomplished writers, editors, and curators. Next week's show will be on April 22 at the Brava Theatre. Tickets for the unrecorded one-time only performance cost $10, and while there is no promise of a live interpretation of a back page crossword puzzle, there will be a post-performance shindig, giving you the chance to fact check the sources yourself.
