Modern Times (1936)
April 05, 2:00 PM–4:00 PM
Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, 4420 Warwick Boulevard Kansas City, Missouri 64111
One of Charlie Chaplin’s classic films pits humans against a modern, industrialized, impersonal city. The main character breaks down while working on an assembly line, but fights to maintain his humanity against brutal bosses who only want their workers to be machines. Released in the midst of the 1930s labor movement, Modern Times was used by J. Edgar Hoover as evidence to blacklist Chaplin and prevent him from reentering the country.
