Los Angeles vs. Las Vegas: Which is the Most Unreal City in America?
April 29, 7:30 PM
Autry National Center, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, California 90027
Reality has hit both cities: water grows scarce, space is tighter, cars clog roads and pollute the air, and money is disappearing. Zócalo hosts a panel of experts—including architect and University of Washington assistant professor Nicole Huber; writer, curator and former director of the Las Vegas Art Museum Libby Lumpkin; and educator, author and architect Ralph Stern—to discuss how the cities can continue to expand and to mirror each other even as they are forced to spar over dwindling resources.

Both cities are living on borrowed water from far away; both cities revolve around industries of illusion (movies and casinos); both cities lie in desert valleys that trap the smog--but perhaps what ties LA slightly better to reality is that being by the ocean, they can at least fish, whereas in Vegas, there isn't much fauna to eat besides tarantulas and snakes.
