Denver Architectural League announces: A Modern House Ideas Competition and Exhibition
Modern in Denver Magazine, Room & Board, AIA Denver and the founding members of The Denver Architectural League invite you to share your ideas on how we should house ourselves in the new century. This is an ideas competition seeking new definitions for modern language, modern living and modern lifestyle. Metaphors are welcome, as are optimism, pessimism, pluralism and nihilism.
The competition is open to all designers and architects who are presently enrolled in a design or architecture program or who have been out of school or licensed (see revised entry guidelines under Recent Announcements) for less than 10 years. There will be $1500 in cash awards and the 1st place winner will be published in Modern in Denver Magazine.
The objective of the ideas competition is to create a design dialogue through an exhibition of the submittals in the context of the northeast Denver community occupying the site of the former Stapleton International Airport. The abandoned runway site lies adjacent to and immediately north of the former airport control tower. This design competition invites exploration of alternatives to production detached housing, with a program that includes family, vehicles and possessions. While recognizing the questionable notion of the single family home in today’s uncertain economic and real estate market, this competition provides submitters with an opportunity to ideate solutions that may influence our perception of ' house' and its meaning in our evolving and rapidly changing culture. For these reasons submitters should acknowledge the question: "WHY WOULD SOMEONE EVEN CONSIDER BUILDING A HOUSE TODAY?"
