Architect Thom Mayne, Distinguished Professor at UCLA's School of Architecture and Urban Design, will be giving a lecture at Los Angeles' Hammer Museum on June 6 followed immediately by a book signing. The lecture, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will focus on the economic revovery of midsize American cities in covering the results of the first part of The Culture Now Project, a joint effort with urbanist Karen Lohrmann and UCLA that aims to combine lawmaking with urban design and contemporary culture.

Wood's subjects are centered around family and friends, domestic or studio spaces, tabletop arrangements of ceramic vessels and plants, and landscapes.

  • Urban China

    Jiang Jun, editor of Urban China magazine, and curator Benjamin Godsill of the New Museum introduce a dynamic multimedia presentation on the history of Urban China as well as the exhibition Urban China: Informal Cities. Godsill and Jiang will discuss the rapidly changing nature of Chinese cities and what these alterations of space mean for forms of social control and organization in contemporary China. Never before seen photographs, maps, and diagrams from Urban China's extensive collection will accompany the talk.

    Art Talk: Erich Heckel

    The Hammer's curatorial department leads a free 15-minute discussion on Erich Heckel's 1916 work, Irrer Soldat (Mad Soldier). Heckel (1883-1970) was a German painter and printmaker, and a founding member of the expressionist movement Die Brücke (The Bridge).
