Stop by the historic Los Angeles Central Library for a special citywide kickoff celebration of SurveyLA, Los Angeles’ first-ever comprehensive survey of its historic resources. Amateur historians and Los Angeles aficionados will gather and share knowledge of L.A.’s hidden gems.
This exhibition features a selection of travel sketches, figure drawings and building renderings by one of modernism’s most important architects, Richard Neutra (1892-1970). The pieces range from early pencil sketches from Neutra’s student wanderings in 1913 to later pastel renderings of his Los Angeles houses from the 1950s. The collection will be accompanied by a free audio tour featuring such voices as Ray Kappe, Kelly Lynch, Sarah Lorenzen, Leo Marmol, Dion Neutra, and Victoria Steele. The audio tour will be available in the gallery via cell phone or by download to an mp3 player.
Postopolis! LA is a live 5-day blogathon of back-to-back discussions, interviews, panel talks, slideshows, films and parties with scheduled and unscheduled guests, themed around landscape and the built environment.
This discussion will focus on the basics of the Rehabilitation Tax Credits program, using case studies as examples, and will give an overview of which redevelopment projects are eligible, and how developers, owners, and architects can take advantage of the program. It will outline recurring challenges involved in using the credits and provide an overview of recent changes in the law that expand the availability of the credits. The discussion will also touch on the central role that the RTC program (and historic preservation in general) can play in promoting sustainability, protecting historic properties and encouraging the conservation of resources.
Enjoy a special evening with two renowned authorities on Southern California modernism: architect and author Alan Hess (Googie, Googie Redux, Palm Springs Weekend, Oscar Niemeyer Buildings) and Charles Birnbaum, president of The Cultural Landscape Foundation (Preserving Modern Landscape Architecture). They'll discuss the history, significance, and preservation challenges of 1960s cultural landscapes, a key but often overlooked aspect of the built environment.
