Lifelike invites a close examination of artworks based on commonplace objects and situations, which are startlingly realistic, often playful, and sometimes surreal. This international group exhibition features artists variously using scale, unusual materials, and sly contextual devices to reveal the manner in which their subjects’ “authenticity” is manufactured.

Lifelike showcases works from the 1960s to the present by more than 55 artists, including Vija Celmins, Keith Edmier, Fischli and Weiss, Robert Gober, Alex Hay, Kaz Oshiro, Charles Ray, Sam Taylor-Wood, and Ai Weiwei.

    Yoshiharu Tsukamoto: Atelier Bow-Wow

    Architect Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and the firm he cofounded with partner Momoyo Kaijima, Tokyo-based Atelier Bow-Wow, just unveiled the BMW Guggenheim Lab in New York, a mobile structure currently in use as a public gathering space and generator for innovative ways to improve urban life. Tsukamoto, associate professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, discusses the pop-up think tank—which will travel to Europe and Asia over the next two years—and other recent international work by the firm, which is known for idiosyncratic yet highly usable residential projects in dense urban environments. Since 1992, Atelier Bow-Wow has designed and built more than 20 homes, public museums, and commercial buildings and published 11 books, including Pet Architecture Guide Book, which catalogues the multitude of odd, ungainly, but functional little buildings wedged into tiny sites around Tokyo.

    Making its U.S. premiere, The Lives of Energy is a new feature-length montage film by Rick Prelinger, archivist, writer, and founder of the world famous Prelinger Archives. The film is compiled from fast-paced sequences of archive material creating a striking new story about the importance of energy in our lives today (2010, video, 70 minutes). A Q&A with the director follows the screening.
