Lace in Translation

The Design Center (TDC) has commissioned three internationally-renowned artists and designers – whose works are often inspired by traditional lace imagery – to mine its historic Quaker Lace archives for inspiration and to reconceptualize conventional notions of lace.

The exhibition will include:

  • A multi-sensory gallery installation featuring furniture, lighting, and laser-cut fabrics by Dutch designer Tord Boontje (www.tordboontje.com).
  • A “lace,” chain-link fence installation in The Design Center’s front yard by the Dutch design studio, Demakersvan (www.demakersvan.com).
  • An environmental installation in the enclosed back yard garden area by Canadian artist Cal Lane, (www.callane.com).

  • The Welcome House

    The Welcome House

    Presented by First Person Arts in collaboration with InLiquid, The Welcome House is an artist residency by day and an art installation by night. The 10' x 10' transparent cube will reside in Love Park at 15th and JFK from October 4-13, 2009. Conceived and curated by artist Marianne Bernstein, designed by Interface Studio Architects with nighttime projection by Ricardo Rivera of klip collective, 10 Philadelphia artists and designers will create new work based on their interaction with the public. The work created in The Welcome House will be exhibited at the First Person Festival at the Painted Bride Art Center, Nov. 3-8. It will remain on exhibit through Dec. 31.

  • Marcel Wanders: Designer

    Marcel Wanders: Designer

    The Dutch designer Marcel Wanders (born 1963) is creating a multimedia installation of personally selected objects to represent pivotal points in his career. Using shifting video images, lighting, and sound to illuminate the development of his body of work, Wanders provides the visitor with a unique visual and sensory experience dramatizing the evolution of his designs over the past twenty years.

    New films—detailing Wanders’s design process and philosophy in projects ranging from manufactured products, hotel interiors, and design art—make their public premier in this retrospective installation. The soundscape that accompanies the films provides Wanders’s personal views on design.

  • Caesarstone Color Pop-Up Tour: Philadelphia

    Caesarstone Color Pop-Up Tour: Philadelphia

    Caesarstone presents a day of color and design with the second stop of their Color Pop-Up Tour to mark the debut of an architectural installation by Thoreen&Ritter titled "You're So Vain"—a preview of the new 2013 Classico colors. The Philadelphia event begins on Thursday, October 11, and features an Elle Decor panel led by Ingrid Abramovitch as well as a cocktail party hosted by Caesarstone and Elle Decor.

  • Alessi: Ethical and Radical

    Alessi: Ethical and Radical

    Surveying a series of milestone Alessi collaborations from 1955 to the present, this exhibition focuses on Alessi’s projects with Ron Arad, the Campana Brothers, Achille Castiglioni, Michael Graves, Greg Lynn, Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Starck, Robert Venturi and others. On view will be 150 objects, drawings, historic factory photographs, and videos that document the achievements of the family-owned company’s projects.
