The most comprehensive exhibition to date of Francesca Woodman's brief but extraordinary career in on view at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art through February 20, 2012.
In less than a decade, before she committed suicide in 1981 at age 22, Woodman produced a potent body of photographs exploring the human body in architectural space and the complex problem of representing the self. Haunting and intimate, direct and visceral, her work reveals the unusually coherent vision of an artist who had barely entered adulthood but who has greatly influenced subsequent generations of artists, particularly women.
From February 18 to May 20, 2012, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) will present the exhibition Rineke Dijkstra, the artist's first midcareer retrospective in the United States. This is the most comprehensive museum exhibition to date of the artist's oeuvre, the first major Dijkstra exhibition organized by an American museum, and the first solo exhibition of her work in San Francisco. The exhibition features nearly 70 color photographs and five video installations, including two new video projections.
In this panel discussion design specialists from both Germany and the UK will examine the impact and implications of the work of Dieter Rams. In the way that Rams himself suggested, "question everything generally thought to be obvious", the debate will refer to the acknowledged influence this major figure has had on industrial design to see what has and could or should still be learnt from his methods and philosophy.
Tajima has envisioned a dynamic, architectural installation that explores the structure and language of painting as well as complicates the institutional history of displaying objects in a gallery. A video projection, a painting rack, double-sided paintings on wheels, and freestanding lamps, alongside wall-mounted paintings are brought together in the installation.
