In 1905 four architecture students founded a new artistic movement with an emphasis on vivid color and emotional directness. This group, called Brücke ("bridge in German), founded by Frtiz Bieyl, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, gave birth to German Expressionism. The show features more than 100 paintings, sculptures and works on paper, and is the first major United States exhibition devoted to these artists.
