Designs for Dignity Designs for Dignity believes that the built environment can have a transformative impact on the experience of those in need. Often, those who could benefit the most from good design have the least access to it. Our mission is to engage the design community and all of its resources to respond to this need.

In the spirit of this work, please join us in honoring the individuals and organizations who have helped us transform the lives of those in need this year. Along with awards, food, and cocktails, the evening will feature a silent auction to benefit Designs for Dignity.

    Apostles of Beauty: Arts and Crafts from Britain to Chicago

    Responding to both the perceived inferiority of machine-made objects and the ills created by industrialization, the Arts and Crafts movement sought to restore dignity to labor and integrate art into daily life. In pursuit of these goals, many designers and theorists advocated handcrafting, stressed the integrity of materials and straightforward construction, and, for aesthetic inspiration, frequently looked to the natural world and non-Western cultures, creating stunning works still admired and collected today.

    Apostles of Beauty presents designs by the movement’s most notable practitioners, from William Morris and Charles Robert Ashbee to Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright. Highlighting a wide range of objects, including ceramics, furniture, metalwork, paintings, photographs, and textiles, the exhibition offers the chance for a large audience to see some of Chicago’s world-class holdings with works from the Art Institute, the Smart Museum, the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, Crab Tree Farm, and other private and public collections.

    MOCA Award to Distinguished Women in the Arts—Annie Leibovitz

    The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles will bestow photographer Annie Leibovitz with its 7th MOCA Award to Distinguished Women in the Arts at a luncheon May 1st at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills. The event is sponsored by the MOCA Projects Council and will benefit MOCA Education and the Contemporary Art Start Program, which seeks to connect 3rd–12th grade classrooms across Los Angeles County with the diversity and power of contemporary art. Leibovitz is currently touring for her book and exhibition "Pilgrimage," at the Smithsonian through May 20, then traveling to the Concord Museum in Massachusetts June 28–September 23. "Pilgrimage" celebrates Leibovitz's foray into capturing images without human subjects, such as Freud's sofa, Annie Oakley's heart-shaped target and Georgia O'Keeffe's door at her home in Abiquiu, New Mexico. Luncheon tickets range from $300 to $1,000.

  • Architecture for Change Summit

    Architecture for Change Summit

    A national summit on affordable housing is taking place September 22-24th at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Designers and activists will join panel discussions on why change is necessary, why design matters, how to make design affordable, strategies for change, and alternative activist practices.

    The conference will feature "Fenced In/Fenced Out," an interactive exhibit from the Museum of Contemporary Phenomena, an art and architecture collective and tours will be led by Chicago architects through the remodeled Archer Courts in Chinatown; green and multi-generational housing in Roseland and North Lawndale; and the adaptive reuse of the Howard Street Theater in Rogers Park.

    Speakers include David Baker, whose Paseo Senter in San Jose earned the 2010 AIA/HUD Secretary's Housing Community by Design Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing; Maurice Cox, Director of Design for the National Endowment for the Arts, whom Fast Company magazine named one of "20 Masters of Design" in 2004; and Teddy Cruz of Estudio Cruz, known for his urban research on the Tijuana-San Diego border and his designs recently seen in "Small Scale, Big Change" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
