There are over 400 exhibitors and 200 speakers attending Dwell on Design. With topics spanning prefab to landscaping to technology, we thought we'd drum up a roster of things to see and do for all the mid-century fiends out there.

Landscaping the Classics

Models of modernist efficiency, the houses of developer Joseph Eichler have gained a cult following over the years. We've covered structural renovations of these modest houses, but what about the gardens? Landscape architects Bernard Trainor and Ive Hagueland offer tips, practical advice, and will detail case studies (like the Sunnyvale garden by Bernard Trainor shown here). Catch the panel on Friday, June 21, at 12:30 p.m. on the Sustainable Design Stage.

The Eames House and the 250 Year Plan

Hear about the plan to restore the iconic Pacific Palisades house of Charles and Ray Eames from Lucia Dewey Atwood, granddaughter of the Eamses and cofounder of the Eames Foundation; Susan Macdonald of the Getty Conservation Institute, which is dedicated to preserving modernist icons; and Frank Escher of architectural firm Escher GuneWardena, which is aiding the process of preserving and protecting the house for the next quarter millennium. The discussion takes place Friday, June 21, at 2:30 p.m. on the Sustainable Design Stage.

Modern Set Design

Whether you’re drooling over Don Draper’s decor or wondering precisely which building Ryan Gosling is standing in front of, you can’t afford to miss this discussion of modern set design. We’re joined by set decorator and production designer Coryander Friend—you may have seen her work at Neutra’s classic Lovell Health House in the 2011 film Beginners—and location scout Rodney Weiner. See them Saturday, June 22, at 4:30 p.m. on the Demonstration Stage.

Future Icons: Predicting the Next Legends

On Saturday, June 22, at 4:30 p.m. on the Sustainable Design stage, furniture expert Sam Kaufman and Oliver Furth, an interior designer and chairman of the Decorative Arts and Design Council at LACMA, talk about iconic furniture pieces that stand the test of time. They'll also provide a few predictions of the pieces every house—and museum—might include decades from now.

Protecting Our Heritage: L.A.’s Modern Masterpieces

Los Angeles is awash in mid-century marvels, from Schindlers to Neutras to Lautners to Eameses. And though enthusiasm for the city’s modern heritage is high, it doesn’t always prevent the wrecking ball—or the garish third-story addition—from coming down hard on a piece of modernist history. The Modern Committee of the L.A. Conservancy’s mission is to preserve 20th-century architecture in greater Los Angeles, and in this session we check in with ModCom's Linda Dishman on their latest efforts to retain Southern California’s unique legacy of innovative design. Catch the talk Sunday, June 23, at 1:30 p.m.
