The original house dated from the 1920s but had series of additions added to it in the 1940s, 1960s, and 1970s. Each section was tacked on to the last with little regard to what came before and some weren't properly permitted or up to code, which added to the complexities of renovating the structure.
Jacobs gutted the interior and added roof decks to make up for the limited backyard space, creating a showpiece of casual southern California living.
