Green Local Nonprofit Q&A: ANEW

At Dwell on Design on Sunday, June 23, on the Sustainable Design stage a trio of do-gooders will discuss their latest undertaking: building 15 LEED-certified libraries in Mexico, using donated surplus office furniture and architectural materials, for the organization The World is Just a Book Away. This will be a great opportunity to learn about local nonprofits ANEW, which cleverly diverts decommissioned commercial furniture and finishings from landfills by matching it to other nonprofits, and the United States Green Building Council Los Angeles Chapter, which represents L.A.’s sustainable and green built environment. Rose Tourje (ANEW), Dr. Jorge Partida (USGBC), and James Owens (WIJABA) will discuss how the collaborative project is progressing.

kickstarter time fold

Kickstarter of the Week: Time Fold

Our favorite Kickstarter campaign of the week comes all the way from sunny Tel Aviv, Israel, where Studio Armadillo is looking to drum up a few shekels for its ceramic suite of ritual Jewish objects, Time Fold. Inspired by the art of paper folding, this set of geometric objects—candle sticks, a menorah, a mezuzah, and a vase—began as origami before being translated into handmade ceramics. We love how the four pieces in Time Fold do double duty as objects of traditional worship and as modernist bits of tabletop decoration you'd be happy to have out all year.

AiryLight by Annelie Berner

Modern living conditions that render the invisible visible takes on new meaning with designer Annelie Berner's AiryLight. This illuminating and interactive project expresses realtime local air quality data through a custom-design lamp's changing light patterns and shadow projections on the ceiling above. Created by Berner as her thesis for New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program, the AiryLight creates soft ambiance indoors, while also consistently informing you about the outdoor environment. The dynamic display of information is meant to be visually informative as well as playfully inviting for viewers and home dwellers to discuss, track, and share what they learn about changes in their day-to-day surroundings.
