Second only to the Eames lounge chair and ottoman, the Arco lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos, with its super arc, is the classic go-to piece for the modern living room. Here are 8 from our pages that incorporate the piece.

Taking its cues from local barns and silos and the rolling Wisconsin terrain, the Field House is a kind of modern observatory for watching winter turn to spring and the great vault of the heavens. A longtime collector of furniture and art, Dr. Robert Geller finally lives among his prized possessions. In the living room, he sits on a Barcelona chair by Mies van der Rohe for Knoll. To his right are an Arco floor lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos and a BeoLab 5 speaker from Bang & Olufsen. Photo by Tom Fowlks.

Modern living room with black walls and light furniture

Thanks to a contemporary interior that she’s been updating for a decade, modern architect Abigail Turin has learned to love her traditional 1925 San Francisco home. Turin embraced the dark in her striking living room—the deep paint is Le Corbusier’s 4320J from Les Couleurs Suisse. An iconic Arco lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos, Charles sofas by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia, an Extra Big Shadow floor lamp by Marcel Wanders for Cappellini, and a painting over the mantel by Martin Barré shed a little light. Sacramento apartment, living room

While in the process of helping his father find a suitable home closer to his family, Sacramento designer Curtis Popp realized he had everything he needed to provide his dad, an artist, with the comfortable, modern environment he always desired. One half of a 1950s ranch-style duplex owned by the designer’s mother—amicably separated from his father long ago—opened up, providing 800 square feet of space for the redo. The elder Popp bought the Le Corbusier chairs in the ’80s and the Arco Flos lamp in the ’70s. Caryn was thrilled to discover that all her personal details look spectacular when offset against the solemnity of concrete. In profile, the freestanding staircase is the most outstanding design accent.

Gregory Katz proves that three times is a charm with his trio of concrete homes, which challenge the status quo in this quiet Johannesburg suburb. Here, the Arco lamp is tucked away behind the freestanding staircase, the most outstanding design accent. Photo by Elsa Young.

Instead of buying new furniture for his weekend home in the tiny town of Sharon, Connecticut, Bill Backus went in favor of re-use and outfitted the house almost entirely with eBay finds, with the exception of the Flos Arco floor lamp by Castiglioni and the Random light by Moooi. “I spent months online looking for the right pieces,” he says. “It was fun sourcing the furniture myself.” Photo by Raimund Koch.

traditional edwardian interior living room

When a family couldn’t part with a traditional Edwardian, their architect introduced a world of design inspiration instead. A sliding door by Bauhaus Fine Windows and Doors leads from the addition into the backyard. A Flos lamp makes the living room. Artist Rebecca Rodgers created the abstract painting. “Every house we looked at had curtains over all the windows,” De Waart says. “Our first real estate agent thought it was strange that I wanted to remove them, but Dutch people like to have very open spaces.”

In December 2007, Nicolette de Waart, her husband, Joost Dop, and their four children moved from Heemstede, the Netherlands, to a modest home in Singapore. A Flos lamp completes the bright and airy living room. Photo by Jasper James.
