Punk House

There’s a fantastic collection currently showing at Atlanta’s Get This! Gallery. “If You Lived Here – You’d Be Home Now” is a set of photographs by Abby Banks, from her recent book Punk House, published back in October by Harry N. Abrams. Inspired by a house populated by punks in San Pedro, CA, Banks roamed the country photographing the unlikely communal homes that sprout amidst the expected normalcy of suburbia.
Around fifty homes in twenty-five cities are showcased, and Banks’ photos capture the highs (skate ramps in the backyard) and the lows (a seventeen-year-old runaway) with equal parts candor, grace and sensitivity. Having lived in a Santa Cruz house not unlike the ones pictured, the images struck a familiar chord. Many of the homes featured in Banks’ work are no longer extant, so the chance to see these vibrant images is not to be missed.
