Artitst Peter Wegner reveals “Buildings Made of Sky” in a new exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

I went to see the exhibition Cut: Revealing the Section at SF MoMA this weekend and was pleasantly surprised to discover Peter Wegner’s suite of inverted photographs of the New York skyline.  These 32 photos look down long streets, buffered on each side by massive buildings.  But by turning them upside down, the negative space of the sky quickly forms the shape of by turns cloudy and cerulean skyscrapers.  Beyond being a clever visual trick, I was struck by the surprising resemblance some of these “buildings” bare to actual structures.  A certain photo will evoke the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty, but more impressive is the way architecture, abstractly here, suggests more architecture.

Cut: Revealing the Section, which also features the work of Gordon Matta-Clark, Lebbeus Woods and Mario Botta, will run until June 8th, 2008.
