Design Awards
Every year, the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum issue the National Design Awards to recognize the best and brightest (or so they deem) in various fields of design, from architecture to fashion to products. For those who constantly complain that the awards don't go to the right people, here's your chance to have your voice heard: Vote for the People's Design Award, where the general public chooses the winners.

The field is wide-open: You can nominate whomever you think best deserves the award. So far, (as of this blog writing), there are 111 nominees, including a shoe, a bridge, an outdoor shower, and an umbrella. The top five nominees based on current voting tallies (including the sound system shown below by Kurt Solland for Harman Multimedia and the Everything is OK tape by MINE pictured at top) are featured on the website, but you can easily browse through all the nominees, leaving comments as you look.

Voting closes at 6pm EST on October 16, and the winner is announced at the National Design Awards gala in New York on October 18.
