mkLotus Showhouse—Part II

It's Tuesday afternoon, twenty-four hours before the official press tours are to begin, and the mkLotus is almost ready for primetime. Sunlight washes the floors (made, incidentally, of FSC-certified wood and recycled ceramic tile) and renders the small house expansive. Some 8,000 plants, including a mini grove of tall, edible bamboo, lend privacy, and the whole package succeeds mightily in evoking the peaceful oasis implied by its name. Seven hundred square feet never looked so inviting.

Although there's still quite a bit of fine tuning and systems work to be done, the major eye candy (landscaping and staging) is a fait accompli, and so the house appeared finished when Mayor Gavin Newsom stopped by in the morning and signaled his approval. This doesn't stop a representative from his office from coming by in the afternoon to issue a warning about inadequate wheelchair access.

Architect Michelle Kaufmann takes it in stride. After all, this is the first full size build-out of the mkLotus modular green design system, and after months of planning, she's finally able to stroll through her vision. The Lotus is her fifth show house (her second in collaboration with Sunset), and each has been a major push and a major feather in her cap. Passersby on Polk Street are asking if they can move in. Would the Mayor mind a bunch of squatters right in front of City Hall?

Kaufmann and her team, including "Tech Dave" from XtremeHomes builders, interior architect Cristina Peromo and landscape architect Nick Thayer finally have a few minutes to reflect. As they talk, it becomes clear that months of work, planning, and cajoling preceded these three manic days on the Plaza. Their mood is triumphant. For Dave, it's because of the linking of Home Director's high performance energy and multimedia management systems to a zero energy house. Peromo is elated to see all the green furnishings—sourced and borrowed from over 30 different vendors—come together so harmoniously. Thayer is pleased that the landscaping models so many of the progressive ideas that will be on display in the West Coast Green exhibitors' tent come Thursday. For Kaufmann, it's all about the house's highly public location, which makes for the biggest stage she's had yet to spread the gospel: good green design for the masses.

mkLotus opens to the press this afternoon (Wednesday) and to conference attendees on Thursday. Check back tomorrow for a slideshow tour, and read Part I.
