DOD: How to Start an Art Collection

Suzanne Shade, director/curator of The Beholder, an online source for affordable art from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.,began her talk on art collecting by saying, "Try typing 'good art' into Google and see what you get. Don't start on the Web."
She advises picking up a few trade magazines (like Frieze or ArtNews) as a good way to suss out what you like (and to discover that boundaries between so-called "high" and "low" art are actually pretty arbitrary). Suzanne suggests the following sites for different purposes.
+To learn about the art market (gallery listings, auction trends, market Prices): Artnet.com
+To buy art online, The Beholder is obviously a great choice, but Suzanne also suggests: Tiny Showcase
+For a twice-monthly news update direct to your inbox: ArtKrush (from Flavorpill)
+Art walks are a low-commitment way to see what's out there, like: Venice Art Walk, LA
+If you don't want to be swayed by hype, decide what's exciting for yourself at MFA shows at schools like: CCA
+And finally, if you're serious about collecting (and have serious cash), art fairs can be invigorating: Photo LA, Art Basel Miami, Affordable Art Fair, NY
At Dwell, we're also big fans of Etsy and are excited about the new site 20X200, where great work can be had for as little as $20.
