Opening: Moss in Los Angeles
For 13 years the enormously influential design shop Moss has been offering a shrewdly curated selection of boundary-pushing lighting, furniture, and other items at its store in the SoHo neighborhood of New York.

Today Moss opens its first showroom outside New York, a 3,500-square-foot space at 8444 Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Murray Moss, its founder, has called the venture “Moss goes to Hollywood.”

Moss is more than just another design shop. It is set up like a museum, and it has a museum’s ability to shape the design agenda for the coming season. Moss refers to his customers as his “audience,” and he talks about the furniture as forming “a narrative.”

Will the narrative play in Los Angeles? Moss is a showman, and he would seem to be a natural for a city of opening nights and oversized personalities. In fact, the Los Angeles store opens with a show called Glitter & Smoke which includes a burned 1938 Steinway baby grand, shown above, by the Dutch designer Maarten Baas. What could be more Hollywood than that?

I went to the opening - and it was sheer "Moss Goes Hollywood" - both Franklin and Murray were in their element. Bravo
